“Thousands have lived without love, not one without water.” — W. H. Auden, Poet.
Water! The essential elixir for life has been available on planet Earth in its various forms of frozen, liquid, and gas. The range of emotions people have for water flows from love to hate and back again depending on the availability. The quantities of potable water are not equally available across the continents with approximately 71% of our earth’s surface being sea (salt) water, with all people and organisms requiring water. Too much or too little water has resulted in both direct and indirect catastrophes around the globe.
The importance of water can also be understood through established language and cultures which have developed a range of nouns and adjectives to describe the compound of H2O in its various conditions. Both our health and wealth systems have a direct dependency on water in various forms and volumes with the result that water has been monetised and weaponised.
What is crucial is that water cannot be separated from life, physiologically and economically! Discussing water will take us all on a holistic journey of discovery from the basics of water supply to preservation, conversion, filtration, and respect.
